Developing accurate lake nutrient models typically requires watershed phosphorus loads, sediment phosphorus release rates, and phosphorus sedimentation rates. Understanding at least two of the three factors is critical in developing an accurate lake nutrient budget. Unfortunately, many lake models are developed without knowing sediment phosphorus release rates or phosphorus sedimentation rates. Our experience has shown that not having sediment phosphorus release rates may lead to a vast underestimate or overestimate sediment's role in phosphorus nutrient budgets. It is extremely difficult to identify the most cost-effective lake restoration practices without developing an accurate nutrient budget. Therefore, the collection of basic sediment information can vastly improve the accuracy of lake nutrient budgets and ultimately save time and money in lake restoration efforts.
