395170 - Optimal dynamic pumps’ triggers for cost saving and robust operation in water distribution systems

In a water distribution system (WDS), pumps are used to supply water from low points to high elevated tanks which supply the network’s demands. The pumps are operated in different ways which could be distinguished by the complexity of the required control system that ranges from simple fixed on-off trigger levels (e.g. bang-bang controller) to complex online pump optimization scheme based on the water demand prediction (e.g. MPC ).

The proposed method utilizes an off-line optimization of dynamic trigger levels which are used to operate the pumps. The dynamics of the triggers are optimized according to electricity tariff structure, pumps’ operation conditions (e.g. number of switches), and long demand series to allow a more robust operation. We provide analytical as well as heuristic solution algorithms to solve the optimization problem and demonstrate the methodology on real-world application.
