Morocco is heavely relying on it’s precious dams infrastructure as a solution to climate variability and seasonnal variation of precipitations, unfortunetelly no serious actions were taken to moderate the curse of the reservoirs siltating du to water soil erosion. Few studies have been carried on the issue, in our knowledge none of them has succeeded in rising awareness among policy planners. In the absence of practical analytical studies on this major issue, we conducted this research as an attempt to measure the amount of soil displaced by water erosion to the reservoir and assess its impact on the the dam life cycle. We considered that providing policy planner with figures will have more effect on them than simply overflying the issue. In our methodology we used gridded surface subsurface hydraulogic model combined with datasets on precipitation, land use and land cover collected from basin agencies and the ministry of agriculture. The spacial data; digital elevation maps, soil maps, soil moisture data were collected from different web sources and from international spacial agencies. Since the displacement of soil is heavelly relying on sediment transporation model we used two approachs: Kilinc-Richardson and slope and unit discharge taking into account overland flow types. The study focused on Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah “SMBA” reservoir located in the Bouregreg watershed basin.The reservoir is the main critical source of drinking water to more than 10 million inhabitants consentrated in the major economic area of the country.The research is supplemented by consulting few research found in the field, discussed with the policy-makers and engi neers working in water planning, and land management in order to discuss the current state of erosion research and mitigation measures in country. Mitigation solutions were simulated changing land cover by reforesting numerically bare lands.
