Saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, measurements and estimates are important for understanding and modeling hydrologic processes at the field-scale. The commonly used instruments and methods provide point estimates of Ks. Unfortunately, high variability is found in the Ks estimates obtained from such instruments and methods, even for a nearly homogeneous soil. Furthermore, conflicting results are observed among different devices. In addition, most methods of analysis are based on simplified models for steady state flux; hence, only the data obtained after steady conditions are achieved to calculate Ks, and information contained in transient stages is neglected. Moreover, the methods rely on different assumptions, thereby, use different equations to estimate Ks. In this study, we will first develop a three-dimensional transient-state model, to estimate and compare Ks values from observations obtained from different instruments. Ks estimates from three commonly used instruments – viz., the double-ring infiltrometer (DRI), CSIRO tension permeameter (TP), GUELPH constant-head permeameter (CHP) will be used together with the reference Ks value obtained using rainfall-runoff experiments. Secondly, we will develop a simplified model to study the spatial structure of Ks at field-scale, using the insights obtained from the transient flow model.

Abhishek is a Ph. D. student in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University. His research interests involve topics such as sub-surface hydrology, hydro-climatology, and UQ in hydrology. His current research focuses on the development of a theoretical framework to better understand the field-scale variations observed in soil saturated hydraulic conductivity. He has also worked in the area of statistical downscaling where he used non-homogeneous Markov models to downscale daily rainfall. He received his masters from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 2016, and and bachelors in civil engineering from Thapar University, Patiala, India in 2013.
