394755 - Elaboration of the willingness to pay curve for household water use in Lima city: results from a case study in stress conditions

“El Niño Costero” phenomenon, presented in March 2017 in the Pacific coast of Perú, caused severe impacts in the coastal cities. In the case of Lima, the capital, a megacity with more than 8 million inhabitants, growing at a rate of 2%, the phenomenon caused a particular water stress scenario in some neighborhoods. Water stress conditions could unveil the importance of water for users, providing a good approximation about the willingness to pay for water. The main objective of this paper is presenting the building process of the willingness to pay curve for household water use in Lima, particularly on those places with water shortages because of the “Niño Costero” event. The curve was built using a survey about water use and water acquisition during the event. An analysis considering different social and economic factors it is done in order to characterize differences in the obtained results.

Prof. Guilherme Marques has been working in the Water Resources Engineering field since 1997 both academically and in consulting. Prof. Guilherme has experience and skills in mathematical modelling for development of Decision Support Systems applied to water resources planning and management. The focus is on finding solutions for efficient operations and management of water systems, based of performance criteria involving economics, equity and environmental sustainability.

Prof. Guilherme has participated and coordinated both research and consultation projects in Brazil, United States, Kenya, France and Canada. Field of work and interest includes modelling large-scale water systems for decision support on planning and management, including hydro-economics, conjunctive use of surface and groundwater, reservoir operation, hydropower optimization and application of optimization theory and methods to water and environmental problems.
