394375 - Gardens and Floodplains - White Creek Restoration at Texas A&M University

Wednesday, June 6
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Regency Room
Co-Authors: Marty Webver, Mpls – Stanley Consultants

The West Campus of Texas A&M University is rapidly developing. Stormwater detention is being installed at many new facilities but it has not been enough to fully mitigate an increase in runoff intensity. The impact of this increased intensity is evident along White Creek, which runs through west campus. Over the last several years, White Creek has experienced severe erosion and downcutting which has put nearby infrastructure at risk.
The upper reach of White Creek runs through an area the University is developing into an outdoor classroom focused on landscape plantings and food production: The Gardens at Texas A&M University. The first construction phase in that development was our restoration project lay back cut banks, reconnect the stream to its floodplain, stabilize the bed using native stone riffles and pools, enhance aquatic habitat, and provide a scenic environment.
Stanley Consultants designed the project, which was constructed in 2016. Since construction, it has sustained three significant flood events without damage. This presentation will cover how the engineering design of creek stabilization, bridge crossings, and stormwater detention were combined with beautification, restoration, recreation, and education opportunities to create this multi-faceted attraction at Texas A&M.
