Warming temperatures due to climate change are projected to cause extreme rainfall to intensify resulting in increased risk of flooding in developed areas. Future climates are also projected to have longer dry periods between these extreme rainfall events. Adapting and mitigating this increased risk is of critical importance for the protection of life and property. The impact of climate change on the effectiveness of adaptation methods, or stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) such as storage ponds and infiltration swales, is a vital question when planning and designing adaptation techniques to deal with flood risk. We provide some answers to this complex question by focusing on the following two questions. 1) How does climate change impact storm temporal patterns and affect the performance of stormwater BMPs. 2) How does projected future climate conditions of extended dry periods mixed with intense storms impact the effectives of stormwater BMPs. We use a comprehensive model of a developed for a developed watershed in Minnesota, USA, along with NOAA Atlas 14 volume 8 storm temporal patterns as the basis for assessing impacts of storm shape. The temporal patterns intensification is indexed using the expected increase in temperature for the RCP8.5 scenario. We also look at variation in soil moisture levels to investigate the impacts of extended dry periods on the effectiveness of these Stormwater BMPs in a possible future climate. Initial results suggest that storm temporal patterns, or ‘how it rains’ can have a significant impact on how well stormwater BMPs perform during a stormevent.
