Phosphorus and nitrogen are key nutrients in crop production and are often applied to agricultural soils. Runoff of nutrients and erosion of soil from agricultural lands impact soil fertility and are important nonpoint sources of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) to surface and ground waters (Smith et al., 2015; Michalak et al., 2013). Despite the importance of P and N, edge-of-field nutrient transport from snowmelt or rainfall runoff on frozen ground have been understudied and the dynamics are poorly understood for many agricultural systems (Panuska et al. 2008; King et al. 2015).
This talk focuses on N and P loadings in agricultural edge-of-field runoff events caused by rain, snowmelt, or a mix of precipitation. The spatial and temporal variation in amount and speciation of N and P in runoff events from five (2,3,4,5, and 8) sites located on the Pioneer Farm near Platteville, WI are examined using data collected over more than 8 years. This work builds on previous efforts (USGS and others) through analysis of an expanded dataset and particular focus on event specific features that drive N and P export from small agricultural watersheds.
