394007 - THE APPLICATION OF AIRBORNE GLACIOGENIC SEEDING TO MITIGATE HAIL DAMAGE IN ALBERTA, CANADA

Tuesday, June 5
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Skyway Room

Since June 1996, Weather Modification International (WMI) has conducted seasonal airborne hail mitigation cloud seeding on behalf of the property and casualty insurance industry in portions of Alberta, Canada. In its current form, the program utilizes five specially-equipped seeding aircraft, directed by meteorologists from a radar-equipped operations center. Seeding is designed to protect high-value property concentrated in urban areas located close to the Canadian Rockies, which serve as the locus for hailstorm genesis.
Aircraft are used to minimize response time and maximize certainty of targeting. Glaciogenic pyrotechnics are burned in racks attached to the trailing edges of wings, and ignited and ejected from the aircraft into supercooled updrafts at and below aircraft altitude. In addition, lower seeding rates are achieved through the use of silver iodide (AgI) solution-burning ice nucleus generators affixed at the wingtips of two of the aircraft.
The seeding methodology and operational procedures are reviewed. A close working relationship between WMI and Canadian air traffic control (Nav Canada) has evolved since the inception of the program, allowing seeding of major storms near and over the Calgary International Airport. The effects of seeding on radar-observed vertically-integrated liquid (VIL), a parameter highly-correlated with hail, are discussed.
