The hydrologic characteristics of the Mentor Marsh is relatively complex due to its interaction with upstream watersheds and downstream Lake Erie particularly during Seiche events. More importantly, the watershed has been experiencing a significant level of salinity from the beginning of early 1960s, especially after the development of salt mine tailings near at the confluence of Blackbrook Creek and Mentor Marsh. While previous studies were good at summarizing the demography, topography, hydrological characteristics and the historical nature of the marsh, specific analysis were not conducted due to the lack of continuously monitored observed datasets. Even the study conducted based on the observed data were relying on the few year’s data with limited analysis and investigation. Therefore, the objective of this study is to continuously monitor the datasets for two years, and simultaneously develop a hydrologic model in the upland watershed. Since it is essential to quantify the watershed input of salinity in the Marsh Creek from various upland sub watersheds, we will establish the monitoring stations at the outlet of those stations, where the backwater effect of Lake Erie is not experienced. The hydrologic model will be calibrated and validated using these recorded data and the salinity level will be correlated with the streamflow. In the next step, salinity contribution from the sub watersheds will be quantified for various seasons. This analysis will be very helpful to take preventive measures to reduce the salinity level and avoid unwanted implications such as fire stress in future.
