393407 - Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Lower-Impact Infrastructure Design and Sustainability Planning

Monday, June 4
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Northstar B

Life cycle thinking and analysis may provide important sustainability insights when evaluating infrastructure alternatives. Many public government entities and private industries are seeking to better understand tradeoffs related to a project’s external impacts, big-picture costs and benefits. Project examples presented will demonstrate a range of project applications using sustainability engineering decision support tools. Information gained has been leveraged to implement internal sustainability programs, inform project formulation and demonstrate project performance under frameworks such as LEED®, ISI Envision°, etc. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a “cradle-to-grave” assessment method that considers how energy and materials are utilized across the interdependent stages of a product’s life from raw material extraction through end of life. Managing environmental performance can be enhanced through targeting the key indicators that together create an entity’s ecological footprint. Estimated impact indicators related to greenhouse gases, various pollutants, embodied energy and water footprint are analyzed for identifying hot spots and performance benchmarks. Streamlined LCA findings will be presented for projects involving brownfield remediation, complete green streets, power generation, sustainability assessment of site redevelopment alternatives and a city-wide urban metabolism model. Benchmarking of different software platforms and calibration of project LCA models to independently available metrics will also be discussed. The application of Triple-Bottom-Line Cost-Benefit-Analysis (TBL-CBA) using Autocase software for multiple Minneapolis-St. Paul public-realm infrastructure feasibility studies will also be presented.
