389630 - A Two-Dimensional Depth-Averaged Water Quality Model: Coupling of SRH-2D with USACE Water Quality Modules

A new two-dimensional (2D) depth-averaged water quality model is developed by integrating SRH-2D model with plug-in water quality modules (WQMs). SRH-2D is a 2D depth-averaged flow and sediment transport model developed at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and widely used for engineering projects. Plug-in WQMs are developed at the US Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) which has been incorporated into HEC-RAS 1D, HEC-ResSim and AdH models. WQMs are distributed as dynamic linked libraries and include several modules. The Nutrient Simulation Module I, NSMI, is designed to simulate aquatic dissolved oxygen, carbonaceous biological oxygen demand, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, and algae biomass with simplified processes and minimum state variables.

Key techniques are presented with regard to how the coupling of hydrodynamic and water quality models is achieved and how the new water quality model is designed for robustness and ease-of-use for engineering applications. The proposed method allows independent time steps being used by SRH-2D and WQMs so that long-term water quality modeling may be realized. The coupled water quality model is tested with cases having known solutions and then applied to the Lower Minnesota River for model applications.

Yong Lai obtained his engineering Ph.D. in 1990 from the Arizona State University and has since been involved in numerous research and engineering projects. At his current position at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, he serves as a team leader and modeling expert in flow hydraulics and hydrology, sediment transport, geomorphic processes, reservoir sedimentation, watershed runoff/erosion, temperature and water quality. Dr. Lai has worked on rivers throughout the United States and internationally, and he is an expert in 2D and 3D computer model development and applications. Several of his models have been widely used such as SRH-2D and U2RANS. He is the lead author of the widely used SRH-2D model. Dr. Lai has provided short-courses on how to use SRH-2D for hydraulic and sediment transport modeling at various locations.

Prior to joining Reclamation, Dr. Lai was a senior research staff and adjunct associate professor at the IIHR – Hydroscience and Engineering, the University of Iowa, in charge of diverse projects. He has supervised more than ten graduate students in carrying out various research projects, and taught graduate-level courses. He has published more than thirty professional papers in international Journals, as well as more than fifty conference papers in diverse engineering areas.
