Since its establishment 50 years ago, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) has evolved from traditional water resources planning and project implementation to a new planning model which focuses on the intersection of water resources goals and urban planning goals. The Minnehaha Creek Greenway is a coordinated planning and implementation effort led by the MCWD that aligns community goals and policy to respond to land-use change in real time around the central theme of water and natural resources. Minnehaha Creek flows 22 Miles from Lake Minnetonka, through the Chain of Lakes over Minnehaha Falls to the Mississippi. Urban development has ignored the asset value of water and natural resources within a community. The Creek has been ditched, straightened, dammed, the surrounding corridor fragmented. Increased urban stormwater has led to the Creek and downstream Lake Hiawatha being listed on the State’s Impaired Waters List. For the last 10 years MCWD has focused on the most degraded section of Minnehaha Creek. Through sustained focus and trusted relationships with the communities, agencies and private businesses along the corridor, MCWD has restored miles of urban stream ecology, integrated hundreds of acres of regional stormwater treatment, while providing multiple other ecological and community benefits. This presentation will provide an overview of how an urban stream has changed and developed over time and how the MCWD is restoring the ecology of the Minnehaha Creek system while leveraging solutions to other urban needs to achieve broader community goals.
