Artificial groundwater recharge that increases the natural supply of groundwater by flood spreading method is of high significant. In this study, suitable sites for artificial groundwater recharge are identified in an aquifer located in Gorveh-Dehgolan plain, in western part of Iran, using Geographic Information System (GIS), Analytical Hierarchy process (AHP) and Fuzzy inference. To achieve this, first the spatial map of seven effective parameters of slope, infiltration, electrical conductivity, alluvial thickness transmissivity, drainage density and land use are prepared and mapped in a GIS environment. Next, the values are weighted using AHP method and maps are overlaid by utilizing fuzzy inference methods. In next step, the study area is divided to five parts as sub watersheds, and finally the best sub region for artificial recharge is selected. The suitability of artificial recharge is also mapped into four classes. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the variation of water resources sustainability for the study area, Planning for Sustainable Use Index (PSUI) is estimated for 3 different scenarios of average and maximum rainfall with and without applying artificial recharge. This index is based on the water balance parameters which can demonstrate the impacts of applying artificial recharge on sustainability of both surface water and groundwater. The results of this study show the significant value of utilizing analytical techniques in evaluating the level of Artificial Groundwater Recharge.
