This presentation will show the results of the implementation of a water quality laboratory in the Mayan community of San Mateo Ixtatan in the Guatemalan's highlands. This project was performed over a three year period in which coordination with several local and national organization was required. In addition to the presentation of the design and implementation activities we will also cover challenges and opportunities for similar activities in different countries. During last summer, we assessed water quality testing services in the community to understand the demand for drinking water infrastructure in areas that lack access to clean drinking water. This study is unique in two ways: we measure drinking water quality at the household level through testing water samples collected at the household, test how much the measured quality diverge from the household’s perception of the quality of the water they use, and then elicit the willingness to pay for water quality testing services. We find a significant divergence in subjects’ perceptions of water quality and the measured bacteria counts in their household water. This divergence is economically important as perceptions play a significant role in willingness to pay for water quality improvements.
