President
Coastal Science & Engineering, Inc
Dr Tim Kana is president of Coastal Science & Engineering Inc (CSE) and a registered professional geologist. His areas of expertise are coastal erosion, impacts of sea level rise, beach nourishment design, and coastal processes. He has conceived and directed more than 40 beach restoration projects in South Carolina, North Carolina, New York, Kuwait and the Caribbean since founding CSE in 1984. Four projects directed by Kana have received a Best Restored Beaches Award from the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) including Isle of Palms SC, Folly Beach County Park SC, Nags Head NC and Seabrook Island SC. Nags Head (2011) at 4.6 million cubic yards was the largest locally funded nourishment project ever constructed in the US. It has been credited with rejuvenating the local real estate market as well as restoring the beach and preventing damage during Hurricanes IRENE, SANDY and MATTHEW.
Kana has written over 250 technical reports and professional papers including Coastal Erosion and Solutions - A Primer (http://coastalscience.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/CSE_Primer_ebook.pdf) which provides a highly readable explanation of the causes of beach erosion and practical methods for managing it. In 2015, Kana received the Morrough P O'Brien Award, ASBPA's highest award for achievement in the coastal sciences and coastal engineering.
