Dr Paul Canning, PhD, CEng MICE, Principal Coastal Consultant, Atkins Ltd.
Paul has two decades of experience in research and consultancy work on coastal and estuarine engineering problems. He started his career at the Universities of Brighton and Bristol, carrying out research on coastal processes on mixed sediment beaches, and received his PhD on this subject in 2002. His consultancy work includes assessment of coastal processes and flood risks, design of coastal structures, wave and tidal power devices, dredging impacts in estuaries, as well as advice on modelling techniques for gravel, sand and mud environments. In the last decade Paul’s work has focussed on large-scale infrastructure proposals, and he has recently completed three large-scale strategies for adapting to climate change in the UK. Over the last 5 years he has delivered the development of Dawlish Warren Beach Management Scheme, which aims to sustainably manage a sand spit and achieve balanced economic, engineering and environmental objectives.
