Barrier Island Restoration
The morphological response of Bay Head, located on a New Jersey barrier island, to several future synthetic storms and sea level rise (SLR) scenarios are simulated using the morphodynamic model, XBeach. To protect Bay Head from these future storms, adaptation strategies (e.g. beach nourishment) are implemented and the storms re-simulated. Based on the effectiveness of each strategy to protect the island from damage during the future storms, the strategies are arranged in an adaptation pathway in terms of SLR scenarios. The resulting comprehensive adaptation pathway can then be utilized as a responsive planning tool as sea levels rise.
