Hurricane Maria and Storm Surge
In this paper we present the results of a multi-model approach to simulating the recent storm
surges due to hurricanes Irma and Maria. The
study focuses on the island of Puerto Rico. The
surge is modeled using a variety of 2DH
numerical storm tide models. All models employ the Non
Linear Shallow Water (NLSW) equations.
The models vary according to the form of the
governing NLSW equations that they employ
(primitive and conserved variable) and the
numerical solution techniques used to solve them.
A variety of different parametric hurricane wind
forcing approaches are also examined.
