Tsunami Inundation Experiment
In the event of a tsunami, conical islands can amplify the run-up on the backside of the islands rather than offering protection. This amplification can result in greater damages and loss of life. The purpose of the study was to observe how reefs interact with this phenomenon. An experiment was carried out in the Directional Wave Basin at the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory. Optical measurements of runup on the planar beach were made to accurately compare the inundation for different scenarios. The methodology to measure run-up could be applied to different scenarios in both laboratory and field.
