Bridging Hospital-based Therapy to Community Participation: Collaboration to Support Community -Based Activity for Children and Their Families

Lakeshore Foundation and Children's Hospital of Alabama have worked together for at least 10 years to encourage children and teens with physical challenges to participate in the many camps and programs available at Lakeshore. In 2016 there was further collaboration to open a clinic and outpatient facility on the Lakeshore campus. This collaboration extends the "rehab journey" from first diagnosis through inpatient hospitalization, medical clinic services, and outpatient therapy to community participation and recreation for children and teens with traumatic injury, amputations, post-op tumor resection, and other life-long conditions like cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Participation in the programs and recreation opportunities at Lakeshore is a great option for an active lifestyle for those who live nearby and an example of what can be done with local gyms and sports programs in any community.

Jonathan A. Knott, DPT

Physical Therapist; Outpatient Team Leader
Children's of Alabama

Adam Knott is an outpatient physical therapist at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham, AL, and the outpatient PT Team Leader. He began his work at Children's 7 years ago, working predominantly with children diagnosed with cerebral palsy and with patients in orthopedic clinics. He currently serves as the Alabama State Representative for the APTA Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy. Adam is currently working at the Children’s at Lakeshore campus to promote the growth of this partnership. Adam has a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Education in Kinesiology from Auburn University and a Doctor of Physical Therapy from UAB.

Lori Watkins, MEd

Coordinator of Athletics and Recreation
Lakeshore Foundation

Lori is an Athletics and Recreation Coordinator for the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama. She began her work 8 years ago coordinating both youth and adult recreation programs, but recently moved to youth land based programs and events due to increased growth in membership. Lori has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Exercise Science from Auburn University as well as earned a Master's of Education degree in Excercise Science from The University of South Alabama in Mobile. Lori has worked closely with Children's of Alabama in thier new role on the Lakeshore Campus.

Emily Mallard, BS

Aquatic Coordinator
Lakeshore Foundation

Emily is the Aquatics Coordinator for the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, AL. She began her time as a recreation specialist and later moved into the aquatics department. She works with people of all ages to develop aquatics programs throughout the lifespan. Emily has a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science from Samford University. She has also completed the Pediatric Aquaticist training through the Aquatic Therapy Univeristy as well as the Aquatic Fitness Professional through the Aquatic Exercise Association. Emily has worked closely with Children’s of Alabama in their new role on the Lakeshore Campus.
