Engaging and Developing a Pediatric Hospital-based Team Using an Evidence Based Framework

We will present a comprehensive plan for engaging and building a hospital based therapy team. The discussion will include ways to engage staff in evidence based competency development, mentoring, and professional development. Main topics of consideration will include developing residency; optimizing resources to meet varying programmatic needs: engaging staff in change: establishing a plan of care; and building therapy programming to meet the needs of pediatric inpatient and outpatient patient care.

Pediatric Rehabilitation Team Leader
The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Julie began her career in 1993 working for Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital primarily providing home and community care. For sixteen years Julie worked for the Baltimore County Public Schools as a school based physical therapist, an early intervention therapist, an early intervention Team Lead, and then in the Office of Special Education as the Specialist for Child Find and Preschool Special Education. Julie was hired by The Johns Hopkins Hospital to establish a Pediatric Rehabilitation Team in 2012. The team currently provides inpatient therapy services for 250 beds as well as providing outpatient services in The Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

Kerry Vela, PT, DPT, PCS, CIMI

Physical Therapist II
Johns Hopkins Hospital

Kerry Vela graduated from West Virginia University in 2007 with her Masters in Physical Therapy. She began working at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2007. She continued her education at Drexel University earning her post-professional Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree with a specific focus in pediatrics in 2011. Kerry became a Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist in 2014. She has a passion for working with children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and serves as the lead mentor for the Johns Hopkins Hospital and George Washington University Physical Therapy Residency Program.
