This session is designed to assist academic faculty and clinical instructors in implementing summative outcome measures to assess student learning of psychomotor skills, knowledge, and reasoning in professional and post-professional education. In an effort to identify standard measures linked to pediatric physical therapy education, three summative outcome measures across the educational continuum will be discussed. A grading rubric specifically adapted to pediatrics for case-based assessment measures the learner’s ability to apply content knowledge, psychomotor skills, and conceptual reasoning as determined by the clinical instructor and self-based student assessment in professional education. Use of a standardized patient experience as another summative assessment with actors portraying a young adult with CP will also enhance the participant’s understanding of student learning. Finally, a live patient assessment in residency education will demonstrate the progression of skills across the educational continuum. These tools will be described and discussed as examples of how multiple types of assessment can be used to shed light on measurement of psychomotor skills, in addition to content knowledge and conceptual reasoning skills, in learners at multiple levels.
Learning Objectives:
- Define terminology related to assessment and outcome measures including objectives, summative and formative assessment, competencies and teaching and learning strategies.
- Discuss appropriate outcome tools to measure student content knowledge, psychomotor skills, and conceptual reasoning skills specifically related to pediatric physical therapy.
- Compare and contrast outcome measures that may best fit the established curriculum and teaching strategies in use.
- Link the pediatric essential competencies to appropriate outcome measures and other assessment tools to demonstrate the linkages in assessment across the educational continuum (professional and post-professional education).
