Guiding Students on the Road Less Traveled: Using Retrospective Case Reports to Connect Academia, Clinical Experiences, and Novel Concepts

This program will bring together academic faculty, clinicians, and student PTs to describe the opportunity for learning afforded by the capstone projects. The retrospective case reports are completed individually by students based on a patient who the student worked with during a clinical rotation. The case report functions as a multifaceted tiered learning experience. The university benefits from the knowledge that the student gathers and reports back, this information helps faculty identify clinical trends, best practices and novel trends occurring in the clinic. Identification of clinical trends that should be integrated into the curriculum is necessary to maintain continual prepardedness for clinical education. The clinicians value the case study as they help to determine effective data collection practices that may drive improved clinical practices. Real clinical capstone examples will be used to demonstrate concepts.

 

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion of this session, the learner should be able to describe the key components of a scaffold framework to facilitate knowledge translation between DPT students and clinicians.
• Upon completion of this session, the learner should be able to recognize the objectives of each stakeholder in the clinical education process including the university, student, clinician, and PT profession .
• Upon completion of this session, the learner will identify strategies that clinicians can use to improve clinical outcomes through student academic assignments and interactions.
• Upon conclusion of this session, the learner will identify strategies to enhance curricular deliverables based on current clinical trends.
