Pediatric Obesity and PT in the Schools: What Is Our Role?

This session will review the current state of intervention for childhood obesity, and recap results of a survey of attitudes and practice patterns of school-based physical therapists. Two fictional cases will be used to explore physical therapy treatment recommendations and dosages for children whose weight impacts their lives and school function. The concept of extreme or super obesity in childhood will also be described and a case presented that illustrates how physical therapy intervention can prepare a child who is in the Class III obesity category + to be able to make use of resources available in the community. This session will also include a discussion of possible outcome tools for documenting real change in function and movement skills in children in the higher-level obesity categories.

Eydie Kendall, PT, PhD, PCS, CAPE

Assistant Professor
Plymouth State University

Eydie Kendall is a physical therapist with nearly 30 years of experience, is a board certified pediatric clinical specialist and a certified adapted physical educator. She holds a PhD in Education and a MS in zoology with an emphasis on developmental neuromuscular physiology. Her most recent clinical practice is as a school-based PT. She has peer-reviewed publications and presentations in multiple areas of pediatric practice and education, on such topics as the role of the school-based PT in intervention for childhood obesity, pediatric content delivery within DPT programs, and the use of virtual technology in teaching pediatric PT assessment.
