This session will explore a multi-participant case study of adolescents who participated in a non-traditional, adapted sports and leisure adventure program facilitated by Mt Washington Pediatric Hospital rehabilitation staff and held at the National Ability Center in Park City, Utah. It will review the co-morbidities and health problems that adolescents often face following a major trauma and discuss how these co-morbidities can adversely affect quality of life, function, participation, socialization, and community re-integration. It will review the format of the 8 day long adapted sports and leisure adventure that the athletes took without parents/siblings, but with an interdisciplinary team of MWPH staff members and other athletes who had similar experiences and discuss criteria for involvement. It will review successful qualitative reports from athletes and staff that demonstrate and describe improved function, quality of life, independence, socialization, and active lifestyle. It will demonstrate significant change in quantitative outcome measures including the COPM, WHOQOL-BREF, and WeeFIM of athletes supporting participation in community re-entry programs to facilitate improved function, quality of life, social engagement, and self-concept in trauma survivors. Long-term outcomes and caregiver reports will also be reviewed. Suggestions for further research will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
- Define co-morbidities and health problems that adolescents often experience after an acquired brain injury and understand how adaptive sports can lead to improved QoL and a more active lifestyle.
.
- Demonstrate understanding of community re-integration programming addressing athletics, leisure, and socialization in adolescent trauma survivors to continue their rehabilitation plan of care in a community setting.
.
- List three different quality of life assessment tools to use in holistic practice and demonstrate understanding of the importance of changes in these assessments for increased participation in the community.
- Identify opportunities for future research in the area of leisure participation, self-concept, and community reintegration for patients after discharge from inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation to improve function and QoL.
