Building Capacity and Tailoring Practice with Families as Foundation for Providing Best Practice in Early Intervention Services Under IDEA

Serving infants and toddlers and their families is the core of Part C under IDEA. Early motor delays have an increased risk for developmental delays in visual motor perception, social-emotional, and cognitive domains. Physical therapists in early intervention can assist families understanding of their child’s strengths and abilities so that families help their children develop and learn. The Division for Early Childhood (DEC) have recommended practice areas and special monograph series that guide practitioners in working with families. These document support promotion of the active participation of families in decision-making related to their child and development of a service plan for achieving the goals they hold for their child. In this interactive session, participants will learn about tools to help engage families to focus on intervention strategies in their natural enviornment. The session will challenge providers to think about their interactions with the child's family and how those interactions strengthen a family’s ability to support learning. Family-centered practices, family capacity-building practices and family and professional collaboration will be discussed with case examples. Participants will walk away with resources and tools to build capacity and tailor practice with families in their natural environment for best practice under IDEA.

Kara Boynewicz, PT, DPT, PCS, ATC

Assistant Professor
East Tennessee State University

Kara Boynewicz, PT, DPT, PCS, ATC is a board certified pediatric physical therapy specialist with 17 years of clinical experience. Dr. Boynewicz is an assistant professor at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) and faculty in the Vanderbilt Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program. Her teaching areas are pediatrics, lifespan, prosthetic/orthotics and motor control/motor learning. She provides clinical physical therapy services in the NICU and NICU follow up clinic. She received her BS in Zoology and Athletic Training at Eastern Illinois University, Masters in Physical Therapy and transitional DPT at Governors State University, and is completing her PhD in Early Childhood.

Professor
East Tennessee State University

Carol Trivette, PhD earned her degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Child Development and Family Relations. Her research interests focus on identifying evidence-based practices for working with children and families in the areas of responsive parental interactions with their children with disabilities, family-centered practices and family support, and the development of tools and scales to support the implementation of evidence-based practices with fidelity. She is currently an Professor at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN.
