Team-based Learning: Clinical Decision-making Across the Lifespan

Join your colleagues during this session for dynamic group discussions about best practice in pediatric physical therapy. Attendees will participate in Team-Based Learning activities, sharing their knowledge, experiences, and skills, to problem-solve and come to a team consensus on clinical decisions. Participants will review a case study that is designed to address pediatric physical therapy across the lifespan, incorporate multiple practice areas, and stimulate critical thinking. Team-Based Learning is an instructional strategy that uses a set of structured activities to create active, energetic, collaborative learning environments. Information designed to support individuals’ ability to participate in the activities and clinical decision-making will be provided prior to APPTAC to those registered for the session. This session will take place in multiple rooms.

Peggy Mohr, PT, PhD

Professor
University of North Dakota

Peggy Mohr. PT, PhD, is a professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her doctorate is in Teaching and Learning: Special Education and her academic work has been focused on pediatric physical therapy and multi-disciplinary education. Dr. Mohr earned certification as a Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) Training Consultant in 2016. She has served as a mentor to faculty who are implementing Team- Based Learning and active learning approaches and individuals working toward TBLC Training Consultant certification.

Heather Lundeen, PT,DPT, Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist

Dr. Heather Lundeen PT, DPT, is an associate professor in the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Mary. She earned her MPT in 1999 and tDPT in 2005 from the University of North Dakota. She is a board-certified clinical specialist in pediatric physical therapy. Sne began teaching in 2008 and has an extensive clinical background. Dr. Lundeen is an Education and Pediatric Academy member. Additionally, she serves as a member of the Pediatric Specialty Council of ABPTS. Dr. Lundeen's research efforts have focused on community engagement of individuals with participation restrictions, and entry-level pediatric physical therapy education.

Kara Boynewicz, PT, DPT, PCS, ATC

East Tennessee State University

Kara Boynewicz, PT, DPT, PCS, ATC is a board certified pediatric physical therapy specialist with 17 years of clinical experience. Dr. Boynewicz is an assistant professor at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) and faculty in the Vanderbilt Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program. Her teaching areas are pediatrics, lifespan, prosthetic/orthotics and motor control/motor learning. She provides clinical physical therapy services in the NICU and NICU follow up clinic. She received her BS in Zoology and Athletic Training at Eastern Illinois University, Masters in Physical Therapy and transitional DPT at Governors State University, and is completing her PhD in Early Childhood.

Michele Courtney, PT/CLT, PhD, MBA is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at Ohio University (OHIO). As clinical faculty, she provides early intervention, pediatric outpatient, and lymphedema services in the surrounding communities. Dr. Courtney teaches primarily in the pediatric and professional development curriculum at OHIO. She is passionate about cultivating students’ professional development and service while serving as Chair of the OUPT Alumni Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Professional Development Portfolio. Her research interests include use of experiential learning, faculty workload and clinical practice, and video modelling for promoting gross motor skill acquisition.

Elizabeth "Elisa" Kennedy PT PhD PCS is an Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Physical Therapy, College of Allied Health Professions, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, University of South AL, Mobile, AL. Her education includes a PhD in Early Childhood Special Education (University of Georgia), MMSc in Physical Therapy (Emory University), and BS in Physical Therapy (Georgia State University). Dr. Kennedy, a Board Certified Pediatric Physical Therapist, has more than 30 years’ experience as an educator, consultant, and clinician. Dr. Kennedy is founding chair of the Early Intervention Special Interest Group, APPT of APTA.
