Movement System Diagnosis Applied to Pediatric Practice

As movement specialists, the use of movement system diagnoses has the potential to organize and integrate information associated with a patient’s health condition and assist physical therapists in selecting more individualized and targeted interventions (Sheets, Sahrmann, and Norton, 2007). Currently, examples of movement system diagnoses in the literature focus on adult populations with acquired medical conditions. This session will begin with a review of the current literature on the impact of using a movement systems diagnosis and explore the key features of movement system diagnoses (MSD) described by Scheets et al. Integration of the ICF model with MSD’s, as they apply to pediatric practice will be discussed, as well as a process for examination using task analysis to inform movement system diagnosis. This integrated process of task analysis and movement systems diagnosis will be explored further using interactive case examples of children with common pediatric health conditions, such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and developmental coordination disorder. Through audience participation, attendees will engage in a clinical reasoning process driven by the ICF model to determine the movement system diagnosis or diagnoses that apply to these case examples, with consideration of how this process may benefit pediatric practice.

Lisa Dannemiller, PT, DSc, PCS

Dr. Dannemiller is an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Colorado. Her career includes 28 years
of pediatric clinical work, pediatric clincal specialist recertification in 2011, a DSc from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2005, and full-time teaching since 2008. She is team leader of a CPG on DCD, active with the CO Chapter of the APTA, FSBPT Exam Development Committee and was Region II Director for the APPT (2011-2017). She is co-chair of the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy's Movement System Task Force.

Madalynn Wendland, PT, DPT, PCS, ATP, received her bachelors of science in physical therapy from the Ohio State University and post-professional doctorate from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is Associate Clinical Faculty at Cleveland State University and Project Manager for Interprofessional Education in the School of Health Sciences and is a member of the APPT Movement System Task Force. Her research interests involve the use of developmental assessments to identify children at risk for neuromotor delays and implementation of early, targeted interventions including the use of low-cost technologies for children with mobility impairments in community settings.

Alyssa LaForme Fiss, PT, PhD, PCS

Associate Professor and Director, Physical Therapy Research
Mercer University

Alyssa LaForme Fiss, PT, PhD, PCS is Associate Professor and Director of Physical Therapy Research at Mercer University, where she teaches courses in research, pediatric PT, and pediatric service learning. She completed her bachelor and master degrees in PT at The Ohio State University. She completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Kentucky in 2007. Her research examines the developmental trajectories of children with CP. Dr. Fiss is board certified as a Pediatric Clinical Specialist and continues to provide services for children with disabilities. She currently serves as the Chair of the Practice Committee for the APPT.

Kathy Martin, PT, DHSc

Professor and Assistant DPT Program Director
University of Indianapolis

Dr. Martin received a BA in Athletic Training from Purdue University in 1987, her MS in Physical Therapy from University of Indianapolis in 1990, and Doctor of Health Science from University of Indianapolis in 2003. She is currently Professor and Assistant DPT Program Director at University of Indianapolis. Her clinical background includes early intervention and pediatric acute care. Dr. Martin teaches the pediatric DPT content at the University of Indianapolis, and her research efforts have focused on orthoses and children with hypotonia. Dr. Martin is currently Chair of the Education Committee and member of the APPT Movement System Task Force.

Genevieve Pinto Zipp, PT, EdD, NAP is a Professor at Seton Hall University in the School of Health and Medical Sciences, Department of Interprofessional Health Sciences and Administration. Dr. Pinto Zipp is Director, Center for Interprofessional Education in Health Sciences. In addition, to mentoring interprofessional health science PhD students she teaches in her area of clinical specialty in the Department of Physical Therapy at Seton Hall. She earned her PT degree in 1986 from UMDNJ and EdD in Motor Learning from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1996. She has co-owned a pediatric neuro rehab school based practice for 25 years.

Dr. Julia Looper is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Puget Sound. She is responsible for courses in pediatrics and critical inquiry. Dr. Looper's research focuses on the development of walking and physical therapy interventions for children with Down syndrome. She frequently presents at conferences and has published in Journal of Motor Behavior, Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, and Physical Therapy. Dr. Looper is an active member of the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapists and is a member of the APPT Movement System Task Force.
