Student goals that address participation within the context of school activities or routines are aligned with federal legislation and state, local, and professional guidelines, but are not universally utilized in school-based practice. This session will present findings from recently conducted original mixed-methods research regarding development and use of student goals that address participation within the context of school activities or routines. This session will discuss 1) facilitators and barriers to development of student goals that address participation within the context of school activities or routines, 2) therapists’ perceptions of how student goals impact physical therapy services and student outcomes, and 3) quantitative findings regarding the relationship of goals to service delivery and outcomes. A “Participation-based goals: Development and implications for practice” tool will be presented. Attendees will discuss their experiences regarding student goals, will share their reactions to the study findings, and will explore strategies to develop and use student goals that address participation. A better understanding of the relationship of student goals, services, and outcomes will help school-based physical therapists identify and utilize school-based PT practices that further student participation in the educational environment.
