Innovative Postoperative Management and Outcomes Analysis for Patients Following SEMLS

The rehabilitation process and the success a patient has after undergoing a SEMLS procedure are directly linked. The Post-SEMLS acute, subacute, and outpatient rehabilitation guidelines are crucial for optimizing surgical outcomes thereby improving patient satisfaction and success. One major factor that appears to be related to post-operative success during the rehabilitative period is the initiation of weight-bearing. Historically, physical therapists waited 6-8 weeks to initiate weight-bearing if a SEMLS procedure included a bony intervention to the femur or the tibia. A recent survey of the literature and other SEMLs programs revealed that institutions widely vary in protocols for weight-bearing initiation. SHC-Houston, a leader in Post-SEMLS orthopedic management, has initiated post-operative weight bearing within 2 days after SEMLs (excludes bony foot reconstruction, patellar advancements, and distal femur extension osteotomies) for over the last 10 years. Prior to this change in treatment philosophy these patients would have typically remained non-weight bearing for 6-8 weeks. The recommended intensity and length of stay for rehabilitation in the hospital will also be discussed.
Both short-term rehabilitation outcomes and long-term surgical outcomes analysis at 1 and 5 years post-op demonstrates that this rehabilitation protocol produces successful outcomes.
