Equipment Across the Lifespan for Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)

The purpose of this course is to introduce therapists to the equipment commonly used for patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) across the stages of their disease in order to help minimize their impairments, promote safety and maximize function. Mobility equipment discussed will include strollers, manual wheelchair, power assist wheelchairs, scooters, and power wheelchairs. Equipment to prolong standing and to support activities of daily living will also be incorporated. Assistive technology will also be briefly touched on. The discussion will include considerations for selection of appropriate equipment, indications for use, advantages and disadvantages of the equipment, and commonly requested features and modifications. The process for obtaining this equipment will be briefly addressed. Case studies will be included to illustrate concepts and content covered in the presentation.

Michelle McGuire, PT, MPT is a physical therapist and coordinator for outpatient staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Michelle has ten years of pediatric clinical experience practicing in the outpatient setting and on the Comprehensive Neuromuscular Center multidisciplinary team. Michelle is a mentor for the CCHMC Credentialed Pediatric Physical Therapy program, as well as a trainer for the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Training Program, from which she also graduated.

Ann McCormick, PT, PhD, NCS

Physical Therapist II
Cincinnati Children's Hospital

Ann McCormick, PT, PhD, NCS is a physical therapist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center with more than 25 years of experience treating pediatric patients in inpatient, outpatient and home health settings. She is currently working on a multi-discliplinary team in the Comprehensive Neuromuscular Center evaluating and treating patients with neuromuscular diseases. Ann is an APTA board certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist. In addition to her clinical practice Ann served on the physical therapy faculty at the College of Mount St. Joseph for 10 years.
