The use of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) in the assessment of heritage structures is extremely effective in obtaining critical information regarding a building’s structural arrangement and condition. All this can be achieved, while minimizing disruption to the historic fabric. Some preservationists, architects and engineers however, who are unfamiliar with the technologies available may be less inclined to use them due to a lack of education on the subject, and, in some cases, due to a lack of confidence in the results. You no longer are limited to expensive solutions like major rebuilds of masonry walls or intrusive interventions like grout injection or epoxy anchors without knowing the actual internal wall conditions or projected outcomes ...now you can get the detailed information you want and just repair the actual problem area.

NDE of buildings and structures in a very broad sense is the act of understanding how energy behaves (be it light, heat, sound, current vibration, or other) when directed at or passed through a building material or component. Correctly interpreting data collected from techniques that use this energy, such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Infrared Thermal Imaging, Metal Detection and Ultrasonics is the key to a successful investigation that will ultimately help a project team fully understand their building and design the most appropriate repairs.

The purpose of this 2-day workshop is to explore the most effective NDE technique combinations, provide attendees a hands-on opportunity to experimentation with NDE equipment, and attempt to eliminate some of the confusion and mystery that frequently surrounds the world of NDE.

Day One of the workshop will be held at The Willowbank School in Queenston, Ontario – an impressive 1830s Greek Revival mansion perched above the Niagara River which is the focus of the Willowbank Centre. Day Two takes you to the Buffalo Central Terminal, one of the largest Art Deco train stations in the country, currently on the 2018 World Monument Watch List.

7:00 to 8:00 - Travel from Hyatt to Willowbank School of Restoration Arts and National Historic Site.

8:00 - 8:30 -Welcome and Introductions, Tim Crowe workshop Coordinator –followed by 10 to 15 minute introductory presentation to the site by Scott Tripp workshop Coordinator, conference vice chair and Willowbank Alumni.

8:30 - 10:30 - General NDE principles (Charles Bransby-Zachary) - leading into a broad based conversation about when NDE is appropriate and when low-tech, traditional solutions may be prudent or combined. NDE Principles will include discussion on numerous different types of NDE tools from the core techniques to discussions about developing technologies such as X-Ray and how their use will change the way we investigate. This section will also include an assortment of Case Studies to provide attendees with a full understanding as to proven NDE applications. (This workshop is targeted toward all general Heritage preservation professionals not Professional Engineers, so that they can gain a functional understanding of these tools. No prior knowledge NDE is required or assumed)

10:30 - 10:45 - Break

10:45 - 12:00 - NDE principles related to masonry - (Michael Schuller).

This will include discussion of topics including rebound hardness, Pulse velocity, impact echo, ultrasonic and Radar. The value of infrared thermography and insitu testing of masonry structure will be covered. The equipment demonstrations will include pulse echo, GPR and shear-wave tomography as well as others.

12:00 to 1:00 - Lunch

1:00 - 2:30 - NDE principles related to Wood - (Lyse Blanchet). In the context of conservation/preservation of historic and heritage structures, the use of NDE and NDT Techniques is necessary. Philosophical and scientific approaches to heritage conservation and sustainability will be introduced. The most effective/efficient NDT techniques to evaluate the condition of existing wooden structures will be presented. Wood science and technology will be briefly touched on. The strategic areas of a historic wooden structure to evaluate the condition, and the location and direction to measure wood characteristics and properties will be shown for different wooden construction types and connections. How to assess the structural integrity and performance of the current structure will be discussed. Case studies of National Historic Sites of Canada and of Federal Heritage Buildings will be presented where the challenges will be exposed and the approaches taken described.

2:30 - 5:30 PM - Break-out sessions - on site NDE demonstrations.
Four - 30-45 minute segments with break intermingled

Timothy Crowe is a licensed architect and or structural engineer with Wiss, Janney Elstner, Associates, Inc., in Northbrook Illinois, and serves as Co-Chairman of the APT Preservation Engineering Technical Committee. He has performed hundreds of evaluations of building structures and cladding systems to address material or system deficiencies. Evaluations have included failure analyses and reinforcing and/or restoration of existing structural systems including timber, concrete, masonry, and steel structures. He has supervised projects through construction observation services for buildings ranging from churches to high-rise office towers.

Charles Bransby-Zachary has over 20 years of experience in Building Assessment and is regarded as an international expert in the field of Non-Destructive Evaluation [NDE]. He has conducted a wide range of investigations and conservation projects for prominent buildings across the USA and England. Mr. Bransby-Zachary graduated from De Montfort University [Leicester], England with a Construction Technology & Management degree in 1996, embarking on his NDE career with a solid knowledge of construction practices and management.

Mr. Bransby-Zachary’s project experience is far-reaching and ranges from complex water intrusion work at the Chrysler Building to detailed construction & condition assessments for the US Capitol, Washington DC and several other US State Capital buildings. Mr. Bransby-Zachary is a Board member of the Association for Preservation Technology, NE Chapter (APTNE) and a Professional Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors [MRICS].

Michael Schuller is president of Atkinson-Noland & Associates, a consulting engineering firm specializing in evaluation and repair of existing structures. He has 30 years’ experience with masonry engineering including special expertise with nondestructive evaluation and repair procedures. He has over 100 publications on concrete and masonry including a book titled “Nondestructive Evaluation and Testing of Masonry Structures” and taught Masonry Structural Design at the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1999 through 2009 and in 2016. Mr. Schuller serves on the Board of Directors of The Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute and The Masonry Society and is a Fellow of The Masonry Society and the Association for Preservation Technology.

Lyse Blanchet, M.Sc., Eng.

Heritage Conservation Services

Structural Engineer with a Master Degree in Wood Science and Technology, and postgraduate studies in the conservation of built heritage. Over thirty years of experience in the heritage conservation field including twenty six years with Heritage Conservation Services (HCS) for Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) as senior structural engineer advisor, and now as National Heritage Coordinator. Lyse has been in touch with evolving national and international heritage conservation practices; and more specifically, she has been involved with education and training in wood science and technology and with the development and applicability of codes, guidelines and standards. Led research projects: NDT for Wood; Modelling Traditional Timber Joints; New Approach for the Condition Assessment of Historic Timber Structures. She has been involved in numerous Design and Construction Projects across Canada as Project Team Leader, Design Manager, and Senior Quality Reviewer. Lyse is a member of the ICOMOS, the ICOMOS International Committee on Wood, the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals and the Association for Preservation Technology International. Lyse delivers a five-day course at Willowbank School of Art, on the Structural Aspects of Cultural Heritage. She is the president of the ICOMOS International Committee on Training,
