Intravascular Lithotripsy: The New Wave in Calcium Treatment and its applications in CLI
Shockwave Medical’s Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) System leverages similar principles to urologic lithotripsy, which has been used as a safe and effective treatment for kidney stones for several decades, to target and disrupt vascular calcium. a series of sonic pressure waves that travel through the fluid-filled balloon and pass through soft vascular tissue, selectively cracking any hardened calcified plaque inside the vessel wall prior to performing angioplasty safely at low pressures. IVL has been used to treat patients with CLI targeting calcium above and below the knee. Discussion will focus on the mode of action of IVL, in-case strategy and its applications in CLI as well as additional applications across the peripheral vasculature.
