The social and racial disparities are significant and well established regarding uterine fibroids. For example, among women who underwent hysterectomy for fibroids, African American women were less likely to receive minimally invasive hysterectomy compared to white women. Studies have also shown African American women who underwent hysterectomies were 40% more likely to develop complications, nearly 3 times as likely to have a long hospital stay, and 3 times as likely to die. This session will explore the real life impact of fibroids, health policies and medical treatments that are contributing to the continued healthcare disparities impacting this condition.
