On November 20, 2017, Haitian-Americans and Haitian nationals were shocked to learn that the Trump administration refused to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals residing within the United States. TPS was first announced after the devastating 2010 earthquake that hit Haiti killing 300,000 people and displacing one million more. The conditions that led to the initial designation of TPS unquestionably remain today. The only factor that has changed is who is in the White House and this White House proudly promotes an immigration policy that is openly hostile to people of color, xenophobic, and unabashedly nativistic.
