QI-1 - Trending Topics in Long Term and Post-Acute Care

There have been numerous changes in for AHCA/NCAL members in the survey and regulatory world over the past several years. It almost seems like a crystal ball is required to keep on top of all the changes that are coming. Join a panel of experts (State Association staff for assisted living and nursing homes and AHCA/NCAL Members) who will discuss upcoming changes to our sector: those we know are coming; and those we strongly believe will be coming our way during the next 12 – 18 months.

This session will include a broad overview of national changes, followed by the perspectives of providers and State Association staff. Finally, there will be an opportunity for everyone attending the session to: (1) pose questions to the speakers; (2) identify the changes they see coming to the nursing home sector; and (3) identify how to prepare for these changes.

Ed began his career in long-term care as a nursing assistant on the night shift while he was completing his doctoral studies. He currently represents Sunrise Senior Living for AHCA/NCAL Quality awards and all association relations. He has 37 years’ experience in the post-acute arena. In addition to his passion for quality in all things he has also worked in Alzheimer’s care development, research and development, sales and marketing, and corporate operations. Ed has served on the senior leadership teams of several corporations in multiple capacities. He was a pioneer in the development of special care units within the skilled nursing facility. He designed and developed the first Alzheimer’s Care Unit within a skilled nursing facility in the state of California. He is a much sought after speaker for national, state and local professional associations and has frequently been asked to key note conferences with a focus on quality, culture change and quality of life issues for our customers.

Ed served on the AHCA Quality Committee that developed the Baldrige-based Quality Award program 20 years ago and then served as an original, senior and master examiner. His passion for quality began in the 80’s when he lead a company of 120 communities through the principles of Total Quality Management.

Dr. McMahon is a clinical psychologist and has degrees in modern languages and Asian History. He is also a licensed nursing home administrator. He has studied at Seton Hall University, the University of Madrid and Psychological Studies Institute.

Lyn Bentley, MSW

Vice-President Quality & Regulatory Affairs

Lyn Bentley is Vice President of Quality & Regulatory Affairs and has been with AHCA/NCAL since 2001 and has worked in long term care for more than 25 years. She leads AHCA's Quaiity Team in developing solutions for AHCA members to provide quality care, and achieve and maintain regulatory compliance.

Kathy Fiery, MS, LNHA, CALA, CSW

Director - Division of Assisted Living/Alternative Care
Health Care Association of NJ

Kathy Fiery, MS, LNHA, CALA, CSW is the Director - Division of Assisted Living/Alternative Care at the Health Care Association of New Jersey. In that capacity, Kathy works to assist HCANJ member assisted living facilities with questions or issues that arise in all facets of facility operations. Kathy represents the interests of those same members at numerous stakeholder meetings and strives to advance the image of assisted living on both a state and national level. Kathy is responsible for the Advanced Standing Program, a collaborative program with the NJ Department of Health that seeks to raise the quality bar and recognize providers that acheive certain quality measures.

Lina A. Dureza, BSN,MSM,FACDONA,LNHA,CADDCT

Hughes Health and Rehabilitation, Inc.

Lina is currently the Administrator for Hughes Health and Rehabilitation, Inc. in West Hartford, Connecticut. She is a BSN graduate of Filamer Christian University in the Philippines and holds a Master's degree in Management from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, The Lally School of Business Management in Hartford, Connecticut.

As a nurse, Lina has several years of experience working in both acute care and long term- care and has been in the latter field for twenty years. She is a Certified Director of Nursing in Long-Term Care as well as Fellow in the Academy of Certified Directors of Nursing Administration. She is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and a Certified trainer for the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP). In addition, Lina is a panelist with the State of Connecticut DPH, IIDR Process and an active member of Connecticut Association of Health Care Facilties and American College of Health Care Administrators. She served as a member of the National Survey and Regulatory Committee, and National Quality Award Board of Senior Examiners.

Throughout her career, Lina has been passionate about making a difference in the lives of those she and her staff care for. In 2014, she was recognized as one of the Connecticut Nightingale Award Winners for Excellence in Nursing, and in 2015, Lina received the Northeast Region Nurse Administrator Award and the prestigious NADONA National Nurse Administrator of the Year Award. Moreover, in 2016, she led her team at Hughes to win the ACHA/NCAL Gold Quality Award. Last October 4, 2017, Lina received the Public Service Award from the Connecticut Nurses Association.

Outside of her work, Lina provides leadership development training to those in the health profession the latest of which was with the Department of Veterans Affairs in West Haven, Connecticut.

Lisa A. Erwin, RN

Executive Director, RN
Senior Services of America

Lisa Erwin is the Executive Director at The Sequoia Assisted Living Community, located in Olympia, Washington. She also oversees assisted living comunity Cooks Hill Manor, located in Centralia, Washington. A Registered Nurse since 1995, she has worked as a home health nurse, hospice nurse, memory care nurse and a nurse at Western State Psychiatric Hospital. She began her carrerr serving seniors in 2001 as an Executive Director. For many years she has worked with DSHS during the survey process and is knowledgable with the many regulations in Washington State. Ms.Erwin feels that working with seniors is a self-rewarding gift to be able to help them and their families in a time of need. Not to mention, the joy of being able to connect with an old sould who has an incredible story to tell and oftern times no one to share it with.

Zach Cattell, JD

President
Indiana Health Care Association

Zach Cattell became President of the Indiana Health Care Association in June 2015. Zach joined the association in September 2010 as General Counsel & Regulatory Affairs and Reimbursement Services. His previous experience includes private legal practice focusing on health care matters, and leading the government relations efforts for the Indiana State Medical Association, the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians and the Indiana State Department of Health. Zach also served as a policy analyst for Governor Jim Hodges of South Carolina in the Governor’s Washington, D.C. office. Zach obtained his Juris Doctor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and his Bachelors of Arts in Political Science at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
