IDDD-1 - The Effective Milieu for Individuals with Complex Behavioral Presentations

Tuesday, October 9
2:15 PM - 3:15 PM
CE: NAB: 1 | Nurses 1

What makes for an effective treatment milieu for individuals with complex behavioral presentations? Often, the emphasis is on containment, control, or safety in ways that conflict with our clinical and professional values. Nurturance is a model that emphasizes growth and fulfillment. Challenging individuals respond to opportunities for choice, preferred activity, engagement, helpful instruction, and recognition of personal best—in short, nurturance. This presentation will describe effective strategies for people with complex behavioral challenges, that are consistent with a nurturing approach. We will share case examples from inpatient and staffed community settings; and of children and adults with ID/DD, brain injuries, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
