Managers in today’s health care environment face significant pressure to achieve results, do more with less, and satisfy many competing demands. Employee retention to achieve staffing stability is a key component in accomplishing these goals. Significant research finds that the first 90 days of employment are a critical learning and socialization period during which employees develop attitudes about the organization, leadership, culture, and their job. These attitudes in turn affect organizational commitment, job satisfaction, performance, and intent to stay (retention). Although many organizations collect workforce data through surveys, focus groups, and exit interviews, in the context of the first 90 days this data is generally unhelpful. Early feedback from and engagement with an employee can provide important insights for understanding what he or she thinks and feels about the job and the organization, as well as many other aspects of the onboarding process. Research also indicates that the higher the level of leadership engagement with the employee, the more significance the employee attaches to that engagement. This presentation provides a model to operationalize individual employee engagement during the first 90 days of employment—the most critical period. The theory-to-practice context presents outcome results associated with the 7/30/60 Day Engagement Model as well as take-away tools and techniques to operationalize this model to respond more effectively to employee development during the onboarding and critical 90-day socialization period.
