DA-3 - Antibiotic Drug Usage and Clinical Indications to Understand Antibiotic Prescribing Practices

Tuesday, October 9
7:45 AM - 9:00 AM
CE: NAB: 1.25 | Nurses 1.25

Antibiotic stewardship programs have been integrated into health care due to antibiotic resistance in various care delivery settings. More than 23,000 people die from antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections in the United States each year. The goal of antibiotic stewardship is to ensure residents receive the antibiotic medications suitable for their clinical indications. The program’s success will decrease the risk of negative outcomes, including the growth of antibiotic-resistant organisms, such as MRSA, or adverse patient consequences. This session will highlight the findings of antibiotic drug usage therapy in long term care settings. Specifically, we will discuss the most frequently ordered and administered antibiotic medications, therapeutic classes, and indications of use. We will also look at the correlation between antibiotic use and adverse outcomes, such as hospital readmission or Clostridium difficile. As the use of antibiotics and infections in long term care is a regulatory concern and care risk, providers must understand how to manage their risk and adapt their policies, procedures, and practices.
