Clinical competency is fundamental to operating successfully within value based purchasing reimbursement structure. Long term care companies need to demonstrate the clinical strength of their RNs to be competitive with ACOs, MCOs and their local hospitals. This session will discuss how offering specialized training such as the Gero Nurse Prep course aimed at preparing nurses for board certification in gerontological nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center can bolster facility competency documentation.

Heidi J. Keeler, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, Omaha Division.; Director, Continuing Nursing Education, University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing; AHCA/NCAL Gero Nurse Prep, received her baccalaureate degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (Amherst, Massachusetts), and her doctoral degree in nursing from The University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha, Nebraska). Dr. Keeler's clinical background is in adult medical surgical nursing, including cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, gynecology, and general surgery, as well as care of elders in the long term care setting.

Dr. Keeler joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing in 2011 as an assistant professor in the Community-Based Health Department. Dr. Keeler's areas of research interest are health promotion and prevention, specifically health policy and advocacy, and health risk reduction. She has published articles on both topics in the Journal of Nursing Management, and the Journal of Pediatric Nursing. She also serves as Director of the Continuing Nursing Education Office, which entails collaboration with multiple medical and professional disciplines to develop and implement continuing education programs, and provides content and editorial support for the Gerontological Nurse Certification Preparation Course. She is interested in advancing scholarship in nursing education, particularly concerning the advancement of distance education and eLearning.

Anna Fisher, DHA, CDP

Dr. Anna Fisher serves as the Hillcrest Health Services health, quality, dementia, and nursing services education expert. Dr. Fisher is responsible for the implementation of educational and quality improvement programs following the identification of clinical needs, competency exams, and supporting the need for high quality of care for diverse business lines that include assisted living, memory support, adult day services, in-patient rehabilitation, outpatient therapy, home health care, private duty, telehealth, palliative, hospice, and skilled nursing care.

Dr. Fisher is also an adjunct professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Bellevue University and teaches in the Masters-Health Administration Program. She was awarded the prestigious Maenner Award for Professorship of the Year in 2012.

Dr. Fisher is co-producer of the award-winning NET Television program series, Now What?, about elder care and dementia. The program series has received the 2012 Bronze Award and 2014 Silver Award of Excellence from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association under the category of Service to Community.

Dr. Fisher is currently President of the Consortium of Dementia Alternatives and Vice President of The Roberts Academy - Montessori High School. She is a Clinical Practice Committee Member, Quality Award Senior Examiner, and Dementia Friendly Designation Workgroup Member for the American Health Care Association (AHCA). She is also a Member of the Emergency Preparedness Committee for the AHCA/National Center for Assisted Living and a member of the National Quality Forum (NQF) Advanced Illness Care Action Team. Dr. Fisher is a certified dementia practitioner, licensed nurse, and holds an undergraduate degree in human resources, graduate degree in business management, and a doctorate in health administration.

Angie Szumlinski, BS, RN-BC, LNHA, RAC-CT

Ms. Szumlinski is a nationally-recognized leader in long-term care, with a wealth of experience in virtually every operational and clinical aspect of the industry. She has experience as an Owner/Provider, Administrator, Director of Nursing, Corporate Quality Assurance Coordinator and independent consultant. In the last 8 years, she has personally conducted over 1,000 on-site risk management visits at facilities across the country, touching every acuity level within the long term care spectrum. As a nationally recognized presenter for health care associations on current trends and best practices in the long term care industry, Ms Szumlinski is the author of hundreds of “best-practice” bulletins, in-service modules and has hosted hundreds of risk management seminars across the country. Respected for success in assisting facilities in achieving and maintaining regulatory compliance, Ms. Szumlinski served as the NCAL Associate Board Member for 4 years, is a member of the NCAL Quality Committee and the AHCA Survey/Regulatory Committe. Ms. Szumlinski has served as a Senior Examiner and Team Leader for the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award Program for 7 years and is a Nurse Planner for HealthCap RMS American Nursing Credentialing Center’s accredited education program.

David Kyllo

Vice President, Insurance and Member Programs

University of Northern Iowa

David Kyllo is Vice President of Insurance and Member Programs for AHCA/NCAL and was the first executive director of the National Center for Assisted Living -- the assisted living voice of the American Health Care Association. His 35-year career in government, regulatory, public affairs and association management in Washington DC includes working for two White House Administrations, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He has been with AHCA/NCAL for 24 years.

He is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and has worked and volunteered in several long term care facilities. David is a past chair of the national Center for Excellence in Assisted Living– a collaborative group of national organizations in Washington committed to advancing quality in assisted living. David is a licensed life and health insurance broker and is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and the American Society on Aging.
