This session will cover 10 principles that address and modify the way we think about, talk about, and care for those who live with dementia. These principles focus on the underlying strengths of individuals with dementia in an effort to enable them to be seen as whole people who still contribute to their communities. We will challenge the language we use to describe behavior, such as “noncompliant” and “refusing care,” as well as discuss why schedules do not work for many of these residents, who no longer live by the clock, and how to modify our approach to care based on these factors. The principles are directly related to developing a mindset change when working with residents living with dementia, addressing the underlying issues of external and internal distress triggers, and improving understanding and intervention in cases of distress.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify at least five strengths of a person living with Dementia
- Demonstrate how modifying language will contribute to overall sustainability in modifying care for those with Dementia
- List three external triggers that contribute to distress in those living with Dementia
