Learning Focus: Teaching and Learning

Teaching methods incorporating constructivist learning theory posit that learning is an active process through which students construct knowledge and meaning from their experiences. As educators shape dental practitioners for 2030, the need to identify quality approaches to learning are pertinent to a changing dental profession. This presentation will describe best practices emerging from a constructivist, student-centered approach to dental teaching. Activities will provide an opportunity for discussion. Participants will discuss the instructional principles of constructivism versus the values of a traditional instructional framework, ways to transform your current curriculum into a constructivist, student-centered format and strategies for authentic learning.
