Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) present challenging behaviors in the dental setting that interrupt or prevent delivery of dental services. Traditionally, patients with special health care needs (SHCNs), have been treated using advanced behavior guidance techniques including conscious sedation and general anesthesia to manage their challenging behaviors. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a behavioral approach that has demonstrated successful outcomes in guiding and shaping the behavior of patients. Several ABA interventions used at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine will be presented, discussed and demonstrated in order to highlight their usefulness in the dental setting.
