Did you know that emotion might affect the processing of knowledge? The teaching environment can impact a student's cognitive function. Positive emotions facilitate cognitive flexibility and openness to information. Cognitive flexibility may help students discover similarities between tasks thereby enhancing the transfer of knowledge. When an individual is in a positive mood, he or she is more likely to process information globally with improved cognitive function. Conversely, a negative mood is more likely to promote focus on detail or local processing where they miss the big picture. Encouraging a positive emotional state through mindfulness and humor promotes strong student cognitive flexibility.
