Saturday, March 17
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Osceola Ballroom 3&4
CE: 1

Target Audience: Faculty

Learning Focus: Emerging Issues and Trends

Dental Education: Public Health Dentistry

Interprofessional education for health professional students places emphasis upon teamwork, understanding other professions' roles and responsibilities, respectful communication and clinical experiences delivering interprofessional collaborative care. According to recent Institute of Medicine reports, "Interprofessional, team-based care has the potential to improve care coordination, patient outcomes and produce cost savings." Yet, challenges remain, as the Institute of Medicine reports also note that "most health care professionals are not trained to work in either intra- or interdisciplinary teams." Community-based education can be a structured means of incorporating Interprofessional education that can benefit students across disciplines and the patients served.
