Negotiation: Contracts & Practical Application

A comprehensive review of the legal aspects of an employment agreement, what pitfalls to avoid, and what to make sure is included is presented. Hear from those involved in contract negotiation and hiring in both private practice and academic practice who will review common components of an offer, as well as what those hiring are looking for in qualified candidates. There will be an opportunity to have individual questions asked and answered by the panel.

Jim Kuzmich is an attorney with Kuzmich & Associates located in Tempe, Arizona. He obtained his juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 2000 and practiced law at Davis Wright Tremaine in Portland, Oregon. In 2004, Jim returned to the Phoenix area to open his own law firm. Jim’s practice is transactional in nature focusing on advising small to medium size businesses. Jim’s areas of expertise include corporate law, real estate, employment, and intellectual property. Over the last several years, Jim has served, and continues to serve, the legal needs of many veterinary practice owners throughout Arizona and in other parts of the country. He has assisted practice owners in startups, acquisitions and dispositions of their practices as well as serving as outside general counsel for a variety of legal matters.

Ron M. McLaughlin, DVM, DVSc, DACVS

Professor of Surgery Chief of Staff Associate Dean for Administration
Mississippi State University, College of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Ron McLaughlin received his DVM from the University of Missouri in 1985 and DVSc from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1991. He became an ACVS Diplomate in 1992. He joined the faculty at Mississippi State University in 2000 and has served as Chief of Surgery, Director of the Animal Health Center, Director of the Veterimary Medical Technology Program, and Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences. He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Administration and Professor of Surgery.
Dr. McLaughlin has served on the ACVS Board of Regents, the Veterinary Orthopedic Society’s Board of Directors, the AO North American Veterinary Trauma Education Committee, and as President of the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians. He has received the Dean’s Pegasus Award for Research/Creative Activity and the Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Julie’s passion for professional development spurred her to become certified by the Canine Rehabilitation Institute (2008) and earn her MBA at St. Mary’s College (2013). Julie has served as a Managing Partner for SAGE Centers since August 2010. Highly respected, she was nominated by her peers to be the Medical Director for the entire organization in 2013. She works directly with the Partners, COO and Management Team as the clinical leader of this organization of four state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals with over 70 doctors and more than 300 employees. Prior to her current role at SAGE Centers, Julie started as an Associate Surgeon for VSA in August 1997. Through the years, she was instrumental in the direction and growth of the organization to include the merger of the practices formerly known as VSA (Veterinary Surgical Associates), VMS (Veterinary Medical Specialists) and TVAEC (Tri-Valley Animal Emergency Center) to become the single organization known today as SAGE. Dr. Smith also works with national veterinary groups to stay connected with the veterinary industry as a whole. She is the Past President of the Veterinary Specialist Awareness and Outreach Project (VetSOAP) and the Treasurer for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

When Julie is not busy with work, she is either traveling the world, learning more about California wine appellations, playing soccer with the “Grasshoppers” on the Bay Area Women’s Soccer League or serving on the Leadership Council for the Positive Coaching Alliance!
