Maximizing Quality of Life: Oral Health and Nutrition
Many efforts are underway on the national, State, and local levels to uncover gaps and highlight public health issues related to oral health and nutrition. In this session, you will find ways to improve and maximize the quality of life for older adults.
National guidance tools will be presented for communities implementing oral health programs. The Administration for Community Living and the Office on Women’s Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services collaborated to offer a step-by-step guide on how to develop and operate cost-effective, sustainable oral health programs, including a searchable database of vetted, low-cost, community-based oral health services for older adults. This session will highlight these tools and their application by community public health professionals.
The National Poll on Healthy Aging (NPHA) at the University of Michigan features older adults’ knowledge and attitudes on timely topics related to healthy aging and ways to best disseminate findings to educate diverse audiences on prevention and strategies for policy development. This session will present early findings from their polls on older adults’ insights, experiences and perceptions, focusing on their nationally representative report on oral health.
Characterizing oral health as a State-wide effort in nursing homes is the subject of a current study in Rhode Island. With the goals of identifying opportunities for quality improvement and supporting healthy aging in nursing homes, the study aims to measure access to oral care supplies, identify where professional dental care is provided, and investigate nursing home administrators’ commitment to oral health care. Results will be used to improve oral health and support future prevention efforts. This session will present a summary of the complete results, gaps identified, and quality improvement initiatives suggested as a result of the findings.

A local nutrition education and training pilot program in Anne Arundel County, Maryland is making advances in nutrition knowledge and behavior change for county residents 60 years and older. By empowering older adults, the Shop’N Eat (Subsidizing Healthy-food Options Plus Nutrition Education and Training) pilot program shows progress in increasing knowledge of nutritional impact on chronic disease conditions, increasing participants’ consumption of fruits and vegetables and increasing older adults’ confidence in purchasing healthier foods. This session will highlight the success and use of nutrition education, along with the buying power use of subsidized grocery cash cards, to increase older adults’ consumption of healthier foods and behavioral changes.

I graduated from University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a Bachelor of Arts in Health Administration and Policy in 2014 with a minor in Social Welfare. During this time I assisted in a research project that study the influence of patient care coordination software in hopes to reduce recidivism among medicare patients. In 2017 I graduated from The George Washington University with a master's degree in Public Health. I have been a program coordinator for Dept. of Aging & Disabilities for the last 11 years. Ten years focusing on community engagement and one year specializing in Nutrition programming/ education. During my year with the Nutrition program I have implemented and conducted on going nutrition education classes and focus on improving the quality of older adults lives in the community.

Erica Solway, PhD, MPH, MSW

Associate Director
University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging

Dr. Solway serves as an associate director of the National Poll on Healthy Aging. She is also a Senior Project Manager with the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation. Dr. Solway has worked in a variety of roles in policy and research in the area of health and aging. Before returning to U-M, Dr. Solway served as a policy advisor with the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging. She received her master’s degree in social work and master’s degree in public health as well as a Specialist in Aging certificate from the University of Michigan and doctoral degree in medical sociology from the University of California, San Francisco.

Holly Kellner Greuling, RDN

SENIOR NATIONAL NUTRITIONIST FOR ACL/AOA
HHS/ACL/AOA

Holly Kellner Greuling is a registered and licensed dietitian (RDN). Holly has been a RDN for thirty years. She currently works at the Department of Health and Human Services, within the Administration for Community Living as the Senior National Nutritionist for the Administration on Aging.
Holly joined the Administration on Aging in August 2012. In Holly’s current job she assists state agencies with the administration of the Older Americans Act and she acts as a catalyst to other federal agencies as they seek to more fully serve the older population. Prior to joining ACL, Holly worked for over a decade as the Florida State Unit on Aging Nutritionist. At the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, Holly was the Older American Act Programs Nutritionist and administered the following USDA programs: the adult portion of Child and Adult Care Food Program, the Senior Farmers Market and during 2009-2012 She was the grantee of an USDA participation grant for an innovative method of accepting SNAP applications from low income elders.
Earlier in her career, Holly practiced in many different health care settings, to include acute, long-term and home and community based care settings.

Daniel Harris, MPH

Data Analyst
Healthcentric Advisors; Brown University School of Public Health

Daniel Harris is a data analyst at Healthcentric Advisors, a nonprofit healthcare quality improvement organization based in Providence, Rhode Island. He worked as a graduate assistant at Healthcentric Advisors for two years while pursuing a graduate degree in public health and was hired as a fulltime data analyst once he completed his degree program. Mr. Harris provides analytic support for projects focused on cross-setting healthcare quality improvement initiatives which primarily target Medicare beneficiaries.

With colleagues at Brown University and Healthcentric Advisors, Mr. Harris has recently published work investigating the predictors of antipsychotic medication use in nursing homes, the association between anxiety symptoms and sleeping medication use in the elderly, and the policy implications of antipsychotic medication reduction.

Mr. Harris has a B.A in Psychology, Summa cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and a MPH from Brown University School of Public Health. He is an incoming doctoral student in epidemiology at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Mr. Harris’ research interests include the epidemiology of aging, cognitive epidemiology and psychiatric epidemiology among older adults.

Holly H. McPeak, MS

Nutrition Advisor
U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services

Holly H. McPeak, M.S. is a Nutrition Advisor with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's (HHS) Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in Rockville, Maryland.
A nutritionist with HHS and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for over 30 years, Holly has developed nutrition education materials based on the 2005, 2010, and 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, including nutrition standards for food service guidelines. She created and promoted the Thermy™ and Is It Done Yet ™ food thermometer campaigns. Recently, Holly helped coordinate the 2018 update of the Eat Healthy Be Active Community Workshops which are being disseminated nationwide.
Holly has worked to apply nutrition recommendations based on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines to older individuals. In 2016, she formed and continues to coordinate an Older Individuals Collaborative on Nutrition (OICN) -- a network of over a dozen federal nutrition and public health experts who touch the lives of older adults. The OICN shares older adult resources and consumer educational materials and promotes topics on healthy aging in nutrition through networking and innovative opportunities.
Holly has a Master of Science in Nutrition from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY.
