Dr. Guadalupe Garcia-Tsao is Professor of Internal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and Chief of Digestive Diseases at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. She is also Director of the Clinical Core of the NIH-funded Yale Liver Center, Associate Editor of Hepatology and was the President of AASLD in 2012. Dr. Garcia-Tsao earned her medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autόnoma de México in Mexico City and completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición in Mexico City. She completed training in Hepatology at Yale University and joined its faculty in 1989. Dr. Garcia-Tsao’s research has been mainly patient-oriented in the area of cirrhosis. She has published over 150 scientific papers, chapters, and reviews. Dr. Garcia-Tsao’s research has been mainly in the area of the complications of cirrhosis, specifically varices, variceal hemorrhage, ascites, and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. She was part of the research teams that established the threshold portal pressure level for the development of varices, the cutoff ascites polymorphonuclear cell count in the diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and that performed the only placebo-controlled studies of non-selective beta-blockers in the prevention of first variceal hemorrhage and in the prevention of the development of varices. She has been a member of various international consensus conference teams that have established current standards in the treatment of cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and its complications. She is the recipient of the Yale Humanism in Medicine Award, is an elected member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and a is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, ACG, and AASLD.
