Dr. Surawicz is Emeritus Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. She spent her entire academic career at UW, at Harborview Medical Center, one of the university's teaching hospitals, where she served as chief of GI for 20 years. In 2002 she was appointed the inaugural Assistant Dean for Faculty Development, a position she held until retiring in 2018. She graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine, in 1973. She completed Internal Medicine residency and a Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Washington, following which she joined the faculty in the Gastroenterology Division. Dr. Surawicz served as President of the ACG (1998-1999), and is a Master of the ACG.
